Directors

Chad Knipfer
Director
Chad Knipfer has been helping the Old Capitol Chorus out for a number of years and has recently been appointed Director after a brief run as Assistant. Chad has been a memeber of OCC for about 9 years and during that time, has been in 4 chapter quartets and has learned a lot through that.

Living around barbershop his whole life, Chad brings a new and energentic approach to the art. His hopes are that he can lighten people up to the wonderful sounds that every person has the ability to make.

After graduating from Doane College in Nebraska with a BA in Music, Chad began taking more of an active role with OCC. Chad currently sings baritone with a quartet called Streamline and has gained a lot of knowledge from working with coaches. Chad hopes to pass this knowledge along to OCC in hopes that they can sing better.

Larry Knipfer
Assistant Director/Directing Coach
Larry received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake in 1967. In 1974 he received his M.A. in Music Education from the University of Iowa. Larry was a music teacher in the Iowa City Community School District for thirty-three years, retiring in the Spring of 2002.
Larry became a barbershopper in 1970 when he moved to Iowa City. He has served as an Assistant Director and has been Director of the chorus since 1999. After serving as director for a number of years, he has decided to retire and help coach Chad and sing tenor. In the early 70's Larry was Director of a Sweet Adelines Chorus in Williamsburg.

He began his quarteting career as tenor in the Formalities from 1971-78. The Formalities became quartet champions of the Central States District in 1973. He performed with Main Street Express from 1978-84. He was asked to join Ralston Creek Reunion, which was active from 1986-95. In 1997 he helped assemble the quartet Reckless Abandon, which includes his youngest son Chad as baritone. He has coached a number of quartets and choruses, in both S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. and Sweet Adelines, in the area over the years.

Over the years Larry has been an active member on the Old Capitol Chorus Board of Directors and has helped push many hot dogs at the chorus food stand at Kinnick Stadium. In 1998 Larry was awarded the Old Capitol Chorus's Barbershopper of the Year.
